Round table “Intellectual property on the rise: how to maximize its positive impact and avoid hazards”
According to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), in 2009, there were less than 2 million patent applications worldwide, and in 2022, 3,46 million applications were registered globally. Intellectual property is a crucial element of progress that is used to translate ideas into real assets which are able to improve the quality of life and solve the greatest global challenges. It is also one of the main tools of closing the development gap and ensuring technological sovereignty which is especially important for BRICS countries and states of the World Majority.
IP BRICS Cooperation Mechanism both tackles issues of paramount importance and ensures its contribution to the economic development and growth in the BRICS countries. Yet, successful and rapid development of the intellectual property market requires a range of complex policies, including the creation of an adequate legal framework, proper protection, effective collaboration of non-government and government players, and, importantly, international cooperation.
Discussion questions:
- Is there a necessity to form a separate intellectual property policy within IP BRICS Cooperation Mechanism?
- What is the role of intellectual property rights in fostering innovation and economic development?
- What are the challenges and opportunities related to intellectual property rights in emerging technologies like artificial intelligence and blockchain?
- How can intellectual property rights frameworks be leveraged to promote collaboration on research and development (R&D) projects between countries?
- What strategies can countries implement to balance the protection of intellectual property rights with the promotion of technology diffusion and innovation in the context of economic cooperation?
